The 1 troy oz Kookaburra is produced by Australia’s Perth Mint as their primary silver bullion coin, which has a fineness of 999 (99.9% purity). These coins were first produced in 1990 to complement their existing bullion coinage. The 1oz Australian Kookaburras silver coins are classified and accepted as legal tender in Australia and have a face value of AUDS$1.
The 1 oz Australian Kookaburra silver coins have always been minted in relatively low numbers in comparison to other bullion silver coins of similar weight and fineness, however, the last 4 years have seen the highest production cap of 500,000 coins per annum.
To see all of the mintage caps and production rates for the 1oz Australian Kookaburra silver coin, look at the Perth Mint's production records. For the collectors amongst you, you will notice that 2004 had the lowest rate of production since that silver bullion series went into circulation.
In 2015 the Kookaburra silver coin series commemorated its 25th anniversary so it bears slightly different inscriptions to normal coinage of the series, for example; the date of mintage was moved to the obverse to make room for the anniversary dates on the reverse.
In order to provide this series of bullion silver coins with an extra level of demand, the Perth Mint decided to make the reverse design change each year for the featured Kookaburra bird.
This annual changing of design, but not the concept, was aimed at garnering interest with coin collectors as well as those looking to purchase 1 ounce silver coins. This altering of the design each year is similar to what the mint has also tried & tested with their 1oz Kangaroo (nugget) gold coins to great success.
On our precious metals marketplaces we only offer you these 1 ounce Kookaburra bullion silver coins in full packs of 20 and not as single coins.
The pack of 20 silver coins you get come in their original plastic shrink wrap packaging, as issued by the Perth Mint and we are not able to guarantee the year of mint.
